My 2nd great grandfather John William Smith was born June 17, 1841 and baptized July 18 at St. Peters church in Parkstone, Dorset, England. He was the only son of William Smith and Sara Hoare. John William was named after his grandfathers, they both happened to be John and his father William. His daughter Edith (my great grandmother) named her youngest son John William.

He grew up in a multi generational home in Parkstone, Dorset. According to census records John, his sisters (Sarah, Louisa, and Ann), and his parents resided with his maternal grandparents (John Hoare and Jane Cookman). His paternal grandparents (John Smith and Diana Payton) had both passed away before he was born.

John was occupied in the same trade as his father, William. All the census records state his trade as a joiner, carpenter or joiner and carpenter. There is an interesting article on London Lives website about carpenters and joiners. It gives a good description of the difference between a carpenter and joiner. It seems the joiner did finer work and needed a knowledge of geometry and math.  

  

When John was 24 years old he married Sarah Everton Wakeman on October 1, 1865 at the St. Peters church. John and Sarah raised their four boys and three girls in Parkstone.

John lived to the old age of 89, dying in Parkstone, Dorset. He survived his wife Sarah by 16 years. According to the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar on p. 406 (on Ancestry website) John William Smith died April 9, 1931. He was living at 31 Cromwell-road in Upper Parkstone, Dorset. Probate in Blandford July 16 to his sons, Horace Gordon Smith, a bricklayer and Sydney Hastings Smith, a florist. The effects were 728£ , 13s, 1d.

My grandmother Dorothy Warry (Paterson) left a wonderful clue to the surname of her maternal grandmother.  She gave my uncle, Bruce the middle name of Wakeman. With a name like Wakeman, you just know it has to be a clue to someone.The confirming evidence was the birth certificate of Dorothy's mother, Edith Elinore Smith. I posted a copy of the birth record in 2011.  Her mother is listed as Sarah Everton Smith, formerly Wakeman. Sarah's middle name is her mother's maiden name. I love it when my ancestors  left clues. 

Sarah was born probably sometime in 1836 as she is baptized May 22, 1836 in Lower Mitton, Worcestershire, England to James Wakeman and Sarah Everton.  In the 1841 census Sarah is  about 6 years old living in Mitton, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England with her parents (James listed as a nailer and Sarah),  six siblings, Charles Everton who is listed as 2 and Mary Everton, 84 (who is probably her maternal grandmother). Sarah's life is somewhat of a mystery between 1851 when she would have be about 16 and 1865 when she marries at 29. I've not been able to find her in the 1851 and 1861 census and she isn't listed in her father household. By 1865 she has made her way to Parkstone, Dorset, England as on the marriage record her residence is listed as Parkstone. 

On October 1st, 1865 in the St. Peters Church in Parkstone, Dorest, England Sarah marries  the carpenter John William Smith. Sarah's father is stated as James Wakeman, a blacksmith. Witnesses are Albert Hoare (probably one of John's cousin on his mother's side) and Anne Smith (probably John's sister). I wonder if any of Sarah's family were at the marriage.

Everyone seems to have a Smith in their family, even if they didn't want one.  Mine is my Dad's grandmother, Edith Elinore Smith. I was quite apprehensive when I discovered her surname. I was a genealogy newbie at the time and wondered how I would ever find the right Smith from so many. But my grandmothers left me a few clues. Edith named one of her sons John William, which happen to be her father's name. But I didn't know it at the time. Her daughter, Dorothy, gave one of her sons the middle name of Wakeman. Which really help piece it together, as that is the maiden name of John William's wife, Sarah. Of course, after I figured it out the hard way, my aunt and uncle handed me her birth certificate. Edith was the youngest the seven children of John William Smith and Sarah Everton Wakeman born August 4, 1876 at Constitution Hill, Kinson, Dorset, England.  Like all her siblings, her father, and her father's siblings she was baptized at St. Peter church in Parkstone, Dorest, England. But unlike her family, Edith may have been a bit unconventional for her time. She married Alfred William Warry, a baptist,  on August 2, 1897 at the Baptist Chapel Buckland Road Branksome. (Can be seen on street view on Google Maps.)

So the girl from the family that went to the church of England for generations married a baptist boy in a baptist church.   She even becomes a baptist stating in the Canadian census for 1911 and 1921 that her religion is baptist.

In the 1901 England census, Edith and Alfred are living at 110 High Street in Chiswick, Middlesex, England with their 2 year old daughter, Dorothy. This is the same address as the Public Benefit Boot Company Shop where Alfred is a manager. Edith was probably pregnant at the time of this census, as Sydney Alfred is born in December 1901. In July of 1904, they welcome another baby boy, John William (Jack). But things are changing as Alfred becomes bankrupt and heads to Canada in March of 1906.

Edith stays in England till December of 1907 when she and the children join Alfred in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I'm not sure where Edith and the children were staying for over a year and a half before they went to Canada. Maybe relatives took them in. The children mostly grow up in Toronto and are there when the first world war starts. Edith's oldest son, Sydney is anxious to join.  In May of 1919, after  previously being rejected for being under aged, Sydney, signs attestation papers for the first world war. Even then he made a little adjustment to his age by stating he was born a year earlier. After the war, Sydney stays in eastern Canada while the rest of the family moves to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. By the 1921 census, Edith and Alfred are in Edmonton, Alberta with two of their children, Dorothy and John.  

In Edmonton, Edith and Alfred open a picture framing, arts and crafts store at 10148 Whyte Avenue, Edmonton. They, also, operate the Acme Dog Kennel, where Edith gains recognition as a lady handler for dogs. 

  

From family stories and photos, I  learned that Edith is once again shown to be unconventional by taking in and raising a little girl of colour, Myrtle.  She had already raised her own three children and was a grandmother.  Although I don't know the whole story of my great grandmother, she  seemed to be a woman ahead of her time with her own mind.

Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

This was another treasure passed on to me by my aunt and uncle.  They found it in a box of my grandmother’s (Dorothy Paterson nee Warry). I don’t think they realized who he was.  Who was John William Smith?  He was my 2^nd great grandfather, father of Edith Elinore Warry (nee Smith).

There are some great clues:

-there is an address-Heather Mount, Heatherlands, Upper Parkstone, Dorset County

-occupation stated as carpenter

-two of his sons stated as Horace Gordon Smith and Sydney Hastings Smith

-written on 01 November 1913, obviously alive at this time

-his wife is still alive at this time

What I don’t understand is why is the outside of the paper dated 22 October 1887 and the writing inside dated 01 November 1913?  Is this really the last will?

I still don’t have a definite death date for John William Smith or his wife Sarah Everton Smith (nee Wakeman).  But these clues should make it easy to track down the correct Smith.  (I hope)

This treasure was given to me by my aunt and uncle.  I’ve been fortunate to have them past on treasures each time I visit.  Sometimes it’s photos, sometimes documents, or sometimes a story or two.
