Funeral of J.R. Landers

Held Sunday Afternoon

The funeral of the late J.R. Landers, who passed away in this on his 70 birthday, February 21, 1929 was held from the Methodist church at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Rev, Harvey O. Cooper, officiating at the services. A large assemblage of devoted friends packed the edifice to pay their last respects to a departed friend and neighbor.

A male quartette composed of Messrs, J.T. Lucy, F.M. Cook, Jack and A.F. Duntach rendered two numbers, “I’m a Pilgrim,” and “Abide With Me,” with piano accompaniment by Mrs. C. Wimpenney, and J.W. Hartzell sang very impressively “In My Father’s House Are Many Mansions,” as a baritone solo, with piano accompaniment by Mrs. Hartzell.

Following the services a large concourse of friends formed a cortege accompanying the remains to the cemetery where brief services were held.

Pall bearers were: George Lampson, Nels J. Holmberg, J.M. Garriott. A.T. Brown, Wm. Cain and J.P. Lacy. Funeral arrangements were under the directions of E.E. Davis of the Davis Mortuary.

Obituary

James Robert Landers was born at Danville, Ind., February 21, 1859 and died at Riverton, Wyo., February 21, 1929 at the age of 70 years. He moved to Keithburg, Ill. In 1870 and there started to master the carpenter’s trade. He was married to Laura B. Bauguess, December 30 1889 at Aledo, Ill. He moved his family to Cody, Wyo., in November 1901, later coming to Riverton at the opening of the townsite, filing on lots here. Later he moved to Nebraska for a few years, returning to Riverton in 1917 and spent the remainder of his life here.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, Mrs. Laura Landers of this city and five sons, Floyce David and Harvey J. Of the city; Earl R and Floyd W of Denver: Albert J. Of Casper. Four daughters-Mrs. Pearl M. Binder and Mrs. Ruby Allen of Rapid City, So Dakota; Mrs. Cynthia R. Temple of Riverton; Mrs. Bessie Belknap [my great grandmother] of Talta [should be Alberta], Canada.

Two sons and one daughter preceded the father in death: Fred Landers of Platte, So. Dak., Sept. 15, 1915; Glenn Landers, Feb. 6 1909, Riverton and Mrs Murl B. Tripplett, Nov. 21, 1924 at Gordon Neb. Fifteen grandchildren and one great grand son also survive him.

My third great grandfather John William Landers probably had a great impact on his granddaughter, Bessie Landers and her brother, Fred and sister, Ruby. In the 1900 census, John and his wife Mary have their three grandchildren living with them on a farm in Mercer County, Illinois. John is stated as being 70 and Mary as 67. They have had eight children of their own, four of them alive in 1900. John is listed as a farmer and his grandson, Fred, is listed as a farm laborer. He owns the farm, but it's mortgaged. The children's father James R. Landers is living in a house in Aledo, Mercer, Illinois with his 2nd wife and their four children.

I wasn't sure what a greenbacker was. But after I read a couple of websites, I learned that it was a political party active between 1874 and 1889. It was named after the green currency used during the civil war. The party had some modern views about income tax, eight hour work days, and women rights to vote. Not sure what it means that he was religiously a liberal.

John W. Landers and Mary Humbert's marriage can be found on the website FamilySearch. On March 21, 1853 they were issued a marriage license in Fountain County, Indiana. They were married three days later on March 24 by Thomas Lyons J.P. They were married for 56 years.

John died in Abingdon, Mercer, Illinois on April 22, 1909. He's buried in the Keithsburg Greenmound Cemetery in Keithsburg, Mercer, Illinois. His wife Mary lives till 1924 and buried beside him.

52 Ancestors - Donald Francis Belknap

Donald Francis Belknap was the first of my great grandparents to come to Canada. He arrived in 1899 with his father Thomas Jefferson Belknap when he was 17 years old.

Donald was born May 14, 1882 in Marshalltown, Marshall, Iowa, USA. He was the youngest of the three children of Thomas Jefferson Belknap and Mary Elizabeth Fiddler. His older siblings were Martin Henry Belknap and Birdie Eldora Leona Belknap

Donald was 16 when his mother Mary died in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. After her death, Donald and his father Thomas went to Alberta, Canada. In 1905 Donald purchased NE 4-40-24-4 by Lacombe, Alberta. His father Thomas purchased the quarter to the west.

The purchases can be viewed at the Library and Archives Canada website under Land Grants of Western Canada, 1870-1930 for Donald Francis Belknap and Thomas Belknap.

In March of 1906 Donald married Bertha Todd. Donald and Bertha can be found on the 1906 census with the post office address of Valley City in Sub-District 28, Strathcona, Alberta. Sadly she died on his birthday just a year later in 1907. She is buried at the Fairview Cemetery in Lacombe.

In 1910 Donald is back in the USA in Geddes, Charles Mix, South Dakota. I wasn't sure why he would go to South Dakota. But taking a second look at his family I realized that his maternal grandmother Frances George Fiddler went to Geddes after her husband Henry Fiddler died in 1896. She probably went to live with her daughter Eldora Elizabeth Fiddler Pierce. So Donald would have had family in South Dakota.

It was in South Dakota that Donald married his 2nd wife Bessie Landers. After a couple of years in South Dakota and losing a newborn son Donald took his wife back to Canada by Lacombe. They cross the North Portal, Saskatchewan, Canada border on September 25, 1912.

Donald and Bessie had three girls, Bertha (Betty), Ruby, and Frances. They are in the Lacombe area till about 1918, as Donald is mentioned in several publications around that area mostly for his water dowsing abilities. See my post Workday Wednesday - Water Witch.

Donald is then found in Telkwa, British Columbia along with his father Thomas and sister Birdie. He's in the Wrigley's British Columbia Directories under Telkwa for quite a few years in the 1920s either as a mixed farmer or lather. I've found the death records for two children born in Telkwa to Donald and Bessie. Uruon Azasiah Belknap was born in 1923 and Mary Elizabeth Belknap was born in 1925. They both died before the age of one.

Donald is back in the Lacombe area by 1928, as he's once again appears in publications. In the Western Globe on December 8 1938:

Donald and Bessie end up in Edmonton, Alberta. Donald's wife Bessie died in Edmonton on January 27, 1947. Donald died 18 years later in Edmonton, on August 13 1965. He's buried at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. I visited the cemetery a couple of years ago and was disappointed to find no grave maker at his plot.

52 Ancestors - George W Knox

George W Knox is my 4th great grandfather on my mother's side.

Me-My Mom-Ruby Alberta Belknap-Bessie Beatrice Landers-Angeline Henrietta Littrell-Letis Ellen Knox-George W Knox.

Although I've found quite a few records and information on George, I ran into a brick wall when trying to find anything on him after the 1860 census. Some of the things I discovered about George W Knox:

George was the son of Moses Knox and Susannah Perkins born in Maine, United States about 1807.
George marries Clarissa Fuller (daughter of Ezra Fuller and Avis Briggs) September 9, 1827 in Jay, Franklin, Maine.
George is found in 1830 census living next to his father-in-law Ezra Fuller in Jay with a total of 3 persons - two being himself and Clarissa, and one female being under 5. I think this may have been their oldest daughter, Letis Ellen, born in 1830.
George is still in Jay, Maine in the 1840 census. He now has one male under 5 (probably George E), one female between 5-9 (probably Lydia), one female between 10-14 (probably Letis Ellen), and himself and Clarissa.
In the 1850, George and his family are living in Mercer County, Illinois at Township 14 N R 4 W. They now have two more children, Sarah and Samantha. According to his daughter's (Letis Ellen) obituary the family came to Mercer County in 1842 by wagon. They are not the only family from Jay, Maine who made the journey to Mercer County, Illinois. George's father and some of his brother's and sister's are part of the group migration, as well as some from Clarissa family.
In the 1860 census, George and his family are still in Mercer County, Illinois, with one more child (Joseph Benjamin).

I've not been able to find George nor Clarissa in the 1870 census, they don't seem to be in Mercer County. But in the 1880 census, his wife (Clarissa) is listed as a widow living with their children Lydia and Joseph in Abington, Mercer, Illinois. So what happened between 1860 and 1880?

I've looked for George in other records and have not found much. No gravestone on Find-A-Grave, that I could find. I've looked on Ancestry and Family Search. I posted a query on a message board on Ancestry, and I've even e-mailed the Mercer County Historical Society. They were very helpful in death dates for George's wife and a daughter but nothing on George's death. They even gave me the e-mail of a cousin who has been most helpful.

52 Ancestors - Bessie Beatrice Landers (Belknap)

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small issued the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks Challenge. Each week focus on one ancestor and post something about him or her. Since March is Women's History Month, it's only appropriate to include women for the rest of the month.

Bessie Beatrice Landers is my great grandmother on my direct maternal line (my mother's, mother's, mother). All of the women in this direct line would have received mtDNA (mitochondrial) haplogroup H from their mother's and they in turn passed it on to their children. Their daughters then pass it on to their children and so on. Sadly I have no daughters who can pass it on, but I do have cousins who have daughters.

Bessie was born August 2, 1888 in Keithsburg, Mercer County, Illinois, USA to James Robert Landers and Angeline Henrietta Littrell. Although Bessie's birth record has her middle name as Imena, she went by the middle name Beatrice in all other records that I've found.

What should have been a joyous occasion turns to sorrow eight days after Bessie's birth. Her mother, Angeline, dies of congestive chill complicated with dysentery. James and Angeline's three children are now motherless, Fred Lewis who is 5, Ruby Jane Jean who is just about 2, and newborn, Bessie.

James remarries in December of 1889 to Laura Belle Baugess. Since there is no census for 1890 to go by, I'm not sure where the children would have been. But in the 1900 census, Fred, Ruby, and Bessie are living with their paternal grandparents, John William Landers and Mary Angeline Humbert. Their father, James is living with his new wife and four children.

By the 1910 census, James, his wife, and their 7 children are in Sheridian, Nebraska. Fred, Ruby, and Bessie have left their grandparents in Mercer County and have all gone to South Dakota. Ruby is married to Altie McCready with an 8 year old daughter from a previous marriage to George Oscar Johnson. Fred is living with the J. L. Johnson's family as a hired hand. Bessie is living with the O.L. Boyden's family as a servant.

Shortly after the census, Bessie marries Donald Francis Belknap on 12 September, 1910 in Charles Mix, South Dakota, USA. Donald Francis Belknap is listed in the 1910 census as a widower and the nephew of Joseph S. Grandon living in Charles Mix, South Dakota. (Still haven't figure out how he is related.) Donald lost his first wife Bertha Ocila Todd in May of 1907 by Lacombe, Alberta, Canada. Somehow both Bessie and Donald, from different parts of the country ended up in Charles Mix, South Dakota, where they meet and married.

Bessie and Donald stayed in South Dakota for a couple of years. 1911 is not a good year for them. Bessie gives birth to a little boy, John Donald Belknap, in May who only survives 20 days. Later that same year in September Bessie's brother, Fred, dies.

Leaving her sister, Ruby, in South Dakota, Bessie follows her husband, Donald back to the Lacombe area in Alberta, Canada in 1912. Bessie and Donald have three girls who survive to adulthood, Bertha Bessie (Betty) born in 1913, Ruby Alberta (my grandmother) born in 1917, and Frances Eldora born in 1918. More women to pass on haplogroup H.

Bessie's father, James Robert Landers, dies February 21, 1929 in Riverton, Fremont County, Wyoming, USA. Fred, Ruby, and Bessie are mentioned in his obituary.

Bessie dies in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on December 27, 1947 at the age of 59.

16. Johnston PATERSON, son of James PATERSON and Ann HUNTER was born on 29 Dec 1814 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He died on 20 Apr 1891 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He married Catherine MUIRHEAD on 02 Jul 1837 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

17. Catherine MUIRHEAD, daughter of George MUIRHEAD and Catherine KENNEDY was born about 1819 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She died on 23 Aug 1897 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire.

18. William DANSKINE, son of James DANSKINE and Helen HARDIE was born in 1816 in Cumbernauld, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. He died on 10 Oct 1885 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He married Agnes FINDLAY on 20 Jan 1837 in Cumbernauld, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.

19. Agnes FINDLAY, daughter of James FINDLAY and Agnes GILCHRIST was born in 1816 in Cumbernauld, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. She died on 08 Aug 1892 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

20. George Augustus WARRY, son of William K WARRY and Mary Ann TAYLOR was born about 1848 in Islington, Middlesex, England. He died in Mar 1916 in Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex, United Kingdom. He married Emily WORTHINGTON on 20 Jun 1875 in Old St. Pancras, Middlesex, England, UK.

21. Emily WORTHINGTON, daughter of William WORTHINGTON and Sarah (Worthington) was born about 1852 in London, England (St. Pancras).

27. Briita Maria RIEKKI was born in Dec 1846 in Pudasjärvi, Oulun Laani, Finland. She died in 1923 in Dunblane, Saskatchewan, Canada (Dunblane Finnish Cemetary).

28. Thomas Jefferson BELKNAP, son of Martin Seymour BELKNAP and Betsey Ann BRISTOL was born on 03 Nov 1850 in Lewis, New York, USA. He died on 17 Jun 1942 (Hazelton, British Columbia, Canada). He married Mary Elizabeth FEIDLER on 01 Oct 1876.

29. Mary Elizabeth FEIDLER, daughter of Henry FIDDLER and Frances GEORGE was born on 02 Dec 1852 in Williams, Calhoun, Iowa, USA. She died on 26 Jul 1898 in Minneapolis, Anoka,
Minnesota, USA.

30. James Robert LANDERS, son of John William LANDERS and Mary Angeline HUMBERT was born on 21 Feb 1854 in Danville, Hendricks, Indiana, USA. He died on 21 Feb 1929 in Riverton, Fremont, Wyoming, USA (Mountain View Cemetary). He married Angeline Henrietta LITTRELL on 29 Aug 1883 in Mercer, Illinois, USA.

31. Angeline Henrietta LITTRELL, daughter of John H LITTRELL and Letis Ellen KNOX was born on 28 Feb 1855 in Dubuque, Iowa, USA. She died on 10 Aug 1888 in Keithsburg, Mercer, Illinois, USA.
