Funeral of J.R. Landers

Held Sunday Afternoon

J.R.Landers

The funeral of the late J.R. Landers, who passed away in this on his 70 birthday, February 21, 1929 was held from the Methodist church at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Rev, Harvey O. Cooper, officiating at the services.  A large assemblage of devoted friends packed the edifice to pay their last respects to a departed friend and neighbor.

A male quartette composed of Messrs, J.T. Lucy, F.M. Cook, Jack and A.F. Duntach rendered two numbers,  “I’m a Pilgrim,” and “Abide With Me,” with piano accompaniment by Mrs. C. Wimpenney, and J.W. Hartzell sang very impressively “In My Father’s House Are Many Mansions,” as a baritone solo, with piano accompaniment by Mrs. Hartzell.

Following the services a large concourse of friends formed a cortege accompanying the remains to the cemetery where brief services were held. 

Pall bearers were:  George Lampson, Nels J. Holmberg, J.M. Garriott. A.T. Brown, Wm. Cain and J.P. Lacy.  Funeral arrangements were under the directions of E.E. Davis of the Davis Mortuary.

Obituary

James Robert Landers was born at Danville, Ind., February 21, 1859 and died at Riverton, Wyo., February 21, 1929 at the age of 70 years.  He moved to Keithburg, Ill. In 1870 and there started to master the carpenter’s  trade.  He was married to Laura B. Bauguess, December 30 1889 at Aledo, Ill.  He moved his family to Cody, Wyo., in November 1901, later coming to Riverton at the opening of the townsite, filing on lots here.  Later he moved to Nebraska for a few years, returning to Riverton in 1917 and spent the remainder of his life here.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, Mrs. Laura Landers of this city and five sons, Floyce David and Harvey J. Of the city; Earl R and Floyd W of Denver:  Albert J. Of Casper.  Four daughters-Mrs. Pearl M. Binder and Mrs. Ruby Allen of Rapid City, So Dakota; Mrs. Cynthia R. Temple of Riverton; Mrs. Bessie Belknap [my great grandmother] of Talta [should be Alberta], Canada.

Two sons and one daughter preceded the father in death: Fred Landers of Platte, So. Dak., Sept. 15, 1915; Glenn Landers, Feb. 6 1909, Riverton and Mrs Murl B. Tripplett, Nov. 21, 1924 at Gordon Neb. Fifteen grandchildren and one great grand son also survive him.

      Dies At Keithsburg

  Keithsburg, Ill., March 22 - Mrs.

Lydia Elzina Brown died at her home

in Keithsburg Saturday March 19, af-

ter an illness of about four weeks.

  Lydia Elzina Knox was the daughter

of Asa and Elmira Knox, pioneer set

tlers in Mercer county.

  She was born Oct. 24, 1851 and her

entire life was lived in the county ex

cept one year spent in Iowa.

  In January 1869 she was married to 

David A. Brown. To this union were 

born 16 children, eight boys and eight

girls. Her husband and five children 

preceded her in death.

  Those who live to mourn her pass-

ing are Rose Kilsey of Washington, Ia.,

William Brown of New Boston, Ill.,

Mina Knox of Gilchrist, Ill., Glen

Brown of Elizas,  Clint, Dan, Clem,

Clive, Louis, Earl and a sister Mrs.

Fern Robbins, all of Keithsburg and

one brother Van Knox of Keithsburg.

  There are 68 grand children, 40  great

grandchildren. Funeral services will

be heald Tuesday, March 22 at 1 p. m.

at the Christian church. Rev. Leslie

J. Ross preaching and burial will be

in Brink cemetery near Joy, Ill.

This seems very fitting around Halloween, as Issac Loomer is buried in the famous Sleepy Hollow cemetery.

  

The funeral of Isaac L. Loomer,                   who died suddenly, in Gardner

Monday, was held from the home

of his daughter, Miss Edna Loomer,

this town, Wednesday afternoon.

Rev. William Bolcourt, pastor of the

United church, officiated. Burial

was in Sleepy Hollow cemetery,

Concord. The bearers were Wilbur

and George Loomer of Worcester,

Noble and Walter Loomer of Con-

cord, Mr. Davis of Gardner and

Oscar Kunst of this town.

HARRY L. LITTRELL PASSES                                           

           AWAY.

  Harry Lincoln Littrell, son of John

and Ellen Littrell, was born near

Keithsburg, January 11, 1864, and de-

parted this life, at his home, July 26,

1920, at the age of 56 years, 6 months

and 15 days.

  He was united in marriage the 20th

day of September 1904 to Mrs. Linnie

M. Burch. To this union was born a

daughter L. June Littrell.

  He began his duties as a man in

early years, as a teacher, afterwards

moving to Chicago with his mother

where he was connected with the Chi-

cago postoffice for a period of 15

years. After his marriage he again

began to teach in which vocation he

continued until his late illness.

  He became a member of the Metro-                                                    

politan lodge No. 860. A. F. & A. M.,

being initiated January 19, 1904, pass-

ed February 23, 1904, and raised

March 29, 1904. He was an enthus-

iastic and consistent worker in the

order and a firm believer in its prin-

ciples.

  He became a member of the M. E. 

church at an early date and after-

wards affiliated with the Disciples of

Christ with when he walked the re-

mainder of his days.

  He leaves to mourn his departure,

his wife, Mrs. Linnie M Littrell, his

daughter, L. June, two sisters, Sadie

E. Hyfield of Burlington, Iowa, and

Lucinda Herson of Fonda, Iowa; two

brothers, Charles and William H.

Littrell, two step children, Everett M.

Burch of St. Paul Minn., and Mrs. 

Mary E Kemp of this city. Besides

these many other dear ones and a

host of friends.

  He was wholesoled and heartily

fervent in his profession, a great

brother in his order, a true disciple of

his Christ, a loving husband, a fond

parent and a loving friend. 

  Funeral services were held Wednes-

day afternoon, July 28, at the Chris-

tian church, Rev. J. M. Dawson of

ficiating under the direction of Ro-

bert Burns Lodge No. 213 A. F. & A.

M.

Sunday's Obituary - Lettis Ellen Knox (Littrell)

Another huge thank you to my cousin Jo for finding and sharing this obituary for my third great grandmother.

                                                                                      

  Mrs. Littis Ellen Littrell, eldest
daughter of George and Clarissa Knox
was born in the town of Joy, Maine,                                
April 14, 1830, emigrating with her
parents to Illinois in 1842 at the age
of 12 years, making the entire trip in
a wagon. She was the oldest of a
family of six children, a brother and a
sister surviving her. In 1849 she was
united in marriage to John H. Littrell
of Dubuque, Iowa. To this union
were born eight children, two dying
in infancy and one daughter who
died in 1888. Those living to mourn
her loss are Mrs. Lucinda Hersom of
Fonda, Iowa, Charles Littrell of Kan-
sas City, Kansas, William H. Littrell
of Nebraska, Mrs. Sadie Highfield of
Oakville, Iowa, and Harry L. Littrell
of Keithsburg, besides twenty-one
grandchildren, thirty-five great grand-
children, five great great grandchild-
ren and host of warm friends. She
was a kind and devoted mother and
grandmother. In her early years she
united with the United Brethren
church, remaining a steadfast member
until about ten years ago when she
placed her membership with the
Christian church of which she was a
member at the time of her death,
which occurred at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Sadie Highfield of Oak-
ville, Iowa, Nov. 17, 1916. She was
86 years, 8 months and 2 days old
and was one of the oldest pioneers of
Mercer county. She came here when
the country was a wilderness and the
Indians were numerous and lived to
see Mercer county one of the foremost
counties in the state. The funeral
services were held in this city Sun-
day, Nov. 19th. Rev. Shepherd of the
Methodist church, assisted by Even-
gelist, Conn, officiated at the services.
Burial took place in Greenmound cem-
etery.

AIRDRIE - SUDDEN DEATH OF MR JOHNSTON

PATERSON - This gentleman, who has been up-

wards of half a century connected with various is-

stituties in Airdrie, died suddenly while sitting at

breakfast in his house, Braehead Cottage, Moffat

Mill.  The deceased was for long the respected

treasurer of the Airdrie Savings Bank, and was

collector for the Airdrie Gaslight Company for

many years. He was also connected with the

Airdrie Town Mission, and was an elder of the

Established Church.

Sunday's Obituary - James Danskin

                      CUMBERNAULD

  DEATH OF MR JAMES DANSKIN. - The community

of this neighborhood would receive with regret the

announcement of the death of this esteemed native,

which occurred in Glasgow on the 17th inst., at the

advanced age of 84.  Mr Danskin had been some-

what frail for the past few years, but when not kept 

indoors by illness, he was frequently coming in con-

tact with many people belonging to the district re-

siding in Glasgow, by shom he was greatly respected

for his estimable character, and hearty interest

he took in matters relating to his native place. He

exerted himself in forwarding the annual re-unions

of the natives, which were originated in Glasgow

some years  ago, and earned the gratitude 

of the supporters of that movement for 

valuable help which he gave to it. Mr Danskin spent

nearly the whole of his life in his native village, and

was always held in much esteem by all who knew

him. For a long period he was an elder in the Free

Church there, and fulfilled the duties of of that position

with honour to himself and acceptance to the congre-

gation. for the last few years he has resided with

his family in Glasgow, and the many friends by whom

he was deeply respected will be sorry that he has been

taken from amongst us.

Sunday's Obituary - Clarissa Fuller Knox

I've been very fortunate to have found some wonderful cousins along my genealogical journey. Thanks so much to Jo for finding this obituary for one of our great grandmothers.

Mrs. Clarissa Fuller Knox died at the
residence of her son-in-law, Issac
Downs, in this place February 24, 1891.
Mrs. Knox was born in Maine in 1816,
and moved with her husband to Illinois
at an early day and made Mercer county
her home ever since. There were six
children born to them, George E., Let-
tis Ellen, who resides in Nebraska,
Lydia, living near Keithsburg, Sarah
Sullivan, of Millersburg, Mrs. Isaac
Downs and Joseph B Knox of Joy. Ser-
vices were held in the M.E. church,
Rev. Brink officiating. The remains
were laid to rest in the Brick Yard cem-
etery.
